FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 15, 2024
The WP Community Collective (WPCC) is pleased to announce the first cohort of participants in its new program, Incentivizing DEIB in WP.
The organizers of the inaugural WordCamp Canada took an active approach to DEIB, with multiple panels, sessions, and even the opening keynote presentation all focused on DEIB issues. The WPCC is proud to support the work of two of the individuals who participated in those important discussions: Meggan van Harten and Nyasha Green.
About Meggan van Harten
“Culture and accessibility can be used to amplify one another.” To make a real difference in accessibility, “we have to think beyond compliance or legislation.”
– Meggan Van Harten
Meggan Van Harten opened WordCamp Canada with her keynote presentation, Accessibility in Action: Indigenous Communities.
Van Harten is Co-CEO for Design de Plume, an Indigenous and women-owned creative agency where she focuses on bringing equity and accessibility into her work.
In her keynote talk, van Harten advocated for considering cultural and Indigenous perspectives to create inclusive solutions.
About Nyasha Green
“Tech doesn’t have to be a members-only place. A community that embraces everyone is a community that grows and lasts forever.”
– Nyasha Green
Nyasha Green joined WordCamp Canada to speak on the Impact on Underrepresented Communities panel on Day 2. Green’s hope was to emphasize to attendees that true community building means helping those that may not comes from the same places they come from.
Over the past few years, Green has been a leading voice on DEIB in the WordPress community. While her professional experience as a software developer, LinkedIn instructor, mentor, and nonprofit founder are part of her WordPress journey, Green’s personal experience in the WordPress community has motivated her work to bring more diverse groups into tech.
About the Program
